What it is

Mailbox MCP is a remote MCP server that connects your existing email account to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code or any MCP-compatible AI client. It lets your AI read messages, search conversations, draft and send replies in threads, handle attachments up to 20 MB, and manage email through filing, flagging and archiving—all without marking messages as read or leaving any trace in your mailbox.

The service works with Gmail, Outlook, Microsoft 365 and any IMAP host. For Microsoft 365 it uses OAuth and Microsoft Graph, so it works even when SMTP AUTH is disabled by security policies. For Gmail it uses app passwords. Attachments are handled four ways: from your mailbox, from the web, from your computer via a temporary link, or created by the AI itself—the first three never pass through the assistant.

You control what each AI connection can do through permission levels (Read only, Draft and file, or Send), a daily call limit, and calendar and address book access. Email routines let your AI work through your inbox on a schedule—morning briefs, replies waiting, bills detected—without being asked, and you can create your own custom routine in plain words.

Can Claude or ChatGPT actually read and send email from my own mailbox?

Yes. Mailbox MCP is a remote MCP server that connects a mailbox you already own to the AI you already use. Claude or ChatGPT can list, search and read messages, draft and send them, reply in thread, move mail between folders, archive it, report spam and flag it. Your mail stays with your provider: no new address, and nothing to migrate.

Can Claude use Outlook? Does this work with Microsoft 365?

Yes. Microsoft switched off password access for IMAP in Microsoft 365 on 1 October 2022, and for personal Outlook.com, Hotmail and Live accounts on 16 September 2024. Mailbox MCP connects through Microsoft Graph with one Microsoft sign-in, and sending goes through Graph too, so you need no Authenticated SMTP and no ticket to IT.

Do I need to enable IMAP in my Gmail settings first?

No. Google removed the IMAP toggle in January 2025 and IMAP is now always on for every Gmail account. Any guide still telling you to turn it on was written before that change.

Do I need to enable IMAP in my personal Outlook or Hotmail?

A personal Microsoft account keeps IMAP switched off until you turn it on. If you connect and the control panel says permission was granted but the mailbox won't open, go to Settings, Mail, Forwarding and IMAP, turn on Let devices and apps use IMAP and save, then connect again.

How do I pay for Mailbox MCP?

By card through Stripe as one annual payment for each thing you buy: a year of Pro on a mailbox, or a year of a Team tier on the account. Card details are entered on Stripe and never held by us. There is no monthly payment option; the monthly figures shown are the annual charge divided by 12, rounded up to the penny.
